Sing All Day

The aim of the project was to develop skills and enthusiasm of recently qualified teachers to sing in their classrooms.  We encouraged them to sing at any time of the day, not just in the "music" lesson.

Each young teacher worked closely in their own classroom with an experienced vocal leader over a period of 6 months.  Ideas were explored on how to fit singing into the whole curriculum - helping the children with their learning in any subject.  New songs were written where nothing suitable could be found, and many songs were adapted to fit in with themes and topics being delivered in the classrooms.

The outcomes for the children, the teachers and the vocal leaders were exceptional.  The teachers greatly increased their skills and confidence to deliver singing in the classroom. The children discovered song writing and learnt about pitching while having great fun. The vocal leaders developed their knowledge of how to weave songs into the curriculum, and enjoyed working closely with teacher and children over a long period of time.

One young teacher said:

"At first I lacked confidence and ideas.  Jane has helped me with both of these issues. Later I felt more relaxed and enjoyed singing with my class.  I felt comfortable enough to just have a go! As a result I can now use singing in other areas of the curriculum.  In future I will continue to plan/use music as an integral part of my teaching."
