Singing - the best antidepressant
I joined Custom Voices in Jan 07 and it’s been one of the best things I've ever done. My first session was truly inspirational- the skill of the director, the friendliness of the group and the sheer joy of being part of that beautiful sound. I couldn't stop grinning and I sang all the way home.
What's more I learned about the N.E. Gospel Choir on that evening. Ever since I can remember I've wanted to sing "Oh Happy Day" with a gospel choir and a year ago I got to do just that - I thought my heart was going to burst with joy! We also get requests to sing at weddings and that's a wonderful experience, I do love weddings.
From someone who'd rarely sung out loud, finding my voice has been quite amazing. One of the group who started at the same time as me said it’s the best anti-depressant on the market; it should be on the NHS. I see it in the faces of the new people who join us when they first hear the sound they can create; it’s like a light going on inside them.
For me it’s a world away from the job that I do so it’s a really refreshing change and it’s definitely helped to keep my stress levels down. Overall my outlook on life has been much more positive. Like most people I've tended to stick with the friends I've had for some time but joining the choir has extended that group and opened up further interests for me.
Both groups are friendly, informal and welcoming of new members and there's no need to audition because however you sing, as part of the choir you'll sound beautiful. My experience has been so positive that I'm happy to spread the word and encourage anyone to "Let your little light shine"!
