Singing - a healing process
I have the best job in the world – I help people to enjoy singing
by Rebecca McGarvie
I’m standing in the middle of a circle of smiling faces. The sound of laughter fills the air as I catch up with friends on the last week. They look up at me with excited anticipation, their eyes filled with warmth and positivity, eager for me to start. A wave of adrenaline hits me as I take a deep breath and sing.
Six years ago I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a debilitating condition similar to M.E. which left me housebound and unable to care for myself. As an 18 year old I was suddenly prevented from considering university, travel or taking on a job. My vibrant life had become a daily struggle with simple tasks like getting dressed or eating a meal a constant challenge. Like many people with the condition I had a varied set of symptoms which were exacerbated by minimal activity. I needed a wheelchair to get out and about and relied on my family and friends to care for me.
After two years of gentle recuperation I was able to start a few small activities. Having been involved in music all my life my family encouraged me to teach singing. I started with one pupil once a fortnight. Over the last four years I have built up my strength slowly, set up a business and founded a charity. I now work as a full time arts practitioner working across all art forms but specialising in singing.
Of all the wonderfully varied roles I play within my job, I am happiest when surrounded by my community singing group. The sense of joy I feel when I work with my group shows no boundaries. Singing fills me with energy and I’m endlessly passionate about bringing singing experiences to as many people as possible.
When I was very poorly I couldn’t sing, my body was just too tired and couldn’t cope. Re-finding my voice was like re-finding my body and helped to start the healing process. When I truly let go and sing, everything else fades away and for these brief moments the pain and symptoms go away and I can be free.
As I gained strength and recovered from my condition I realised how many other people could benefit from the joyful peace and fulfilment that the arts, especially singing can bring. Since then I have worked with hundreds of singers, particularly within my home town of Darlington.
I feel so privileged that I can spend my time helping others to feel good and enjoy singing.
