20,000 Voices promotes, supports and develops singing for all. The organisation was founded in 1993 in Northumberland with a remit to the north east. Increasingly we work in a widening geographical context.

We aim to:

  • Empower all people through singing;
  • Engage people in the development of vocal & communication skills;
  • Enrich lives through learning and participation;
  • Enhance health and wellbeing with the benefits of singing;
  • Extend access to participation in singing;

Past priorities have focused on engagement, social cohesion, building and uniting communities. We have worked on regeneration and inter-generational projects, aimed at unemployed, disenfranchised, low income, low esteem groups. This work is about health, well being, developing confidence and transferable skills. This has led to more recent work, developing eg Singing for Lung Health, work with dementia, etc.

Singing develops many life skills; concentration, focus, linguistic skills, creative skills, social skills, building better relationships, as well as musical ability. Other benefits follow: singing improves posture, breathing, builds self esteem, is enjoyable and social, and may improve motor skills and employability. We work with people from all backgrounds, and all ages.

20,000 Voices promotes vocal and choral music in all genres and styles.

We offer experiences to singers through workshops, projects and our network of affiliated choirs, from beginners to advanced, amateur and professional.

We offer training for choir leaders, through CPD programmes, both independently and in partnership with recognised national bodies, and through special projects.
